Launch of new Catering & Hospitality Academy
For some years Hull Training has provided entry level training in Catering and Hospitality for young people who are leaving school. This has included hands-on learning with options in food preparation, cooking and food processing. In January this year, Ian Barrs was appointed as a dedicated Catering and Hospitality Training Manager, with the remit of further developing training support within this important sector for both young learners and existing employees across the region.
Since joining Hull Training, Ian has worked with his team to develop a wider range of training options, which now includes an Apprenticeship programme – aimed at young people who would like to pursue a career working with food and drink.
Other short courses and bespoke training opportunities are also in development, which will support employers who want to improve the skills of their their staff.
Now, after four months of preparation, the Hull Training Catering & Hospitality Academy has been officially opened on 24th April by the The Right Worshipful the Lord Mayor of Kingston Upon Hull and Admiral of the Humber Councillor Elaine Garland.
The facilities at the Catering & Hospitality Academy include a central production unit for food preparation, fully equipped training kitchen, dedicated learning rooms and a fully operational retail unit – known as Louis’ Café and Bistro.
Ian Barrs comments:
“Our new Catering & Hospitality Academy includes all the resources needed for our learners to acquire the knowledge and skills which will give them a real insight into the world of catering and hospitality. Here, they will combine training in the classroom with experience of working ‘on the job’, so that they are both suitably qualified and prepared to make a real contribution to any future employer”.
Throughout the launch day visitors had the opportunity to see young learners and staff at work within the different working areas of the Academy centre.
